Our Wedgwood Collection

From Page 10, CRHS Newsletter #54, 28th March 2000

The C. W. Jarvis collection of Wedgwood will be officially opened by Mr. Allan Landis, of Sydney, a member of the Wedgwood Society, on Sunday 2nd April, 2000 at 1.30pm at Schaeffer House.

This magnificent collection, purchased over the last fifty years has been gifted to the society by Colin Jarvis, a long standing member of this society.

It comprises well over one hundred pieces, varying from 18th century tripod vases and flower pots to the Year 2000 trophy plate.

Included in the display are the usual ‘Jasper Ware’ ranging in colour from the traditional blue and white to many shades of green, lilac, blue and red.

Two very fine flooded gum cabinets have been crafted by Rob McSkimming, assisted by Max Lloyd to house all the items presented to us.

Among the many pieces is a black basalt lidded urn and a pair of ‘spill vases’- not to hold flowers but for wax tapers and slivers of wood used to light the lamps or the gentleman’s pipe.

Josiah Wedgwood devised this new clay body made from iron-bearing clay with the addition of manganese dioxide, which gave it it’s black colour when fired. The result is quite hard and dense and should last forever.

This society is indeed fortunate to be the recipient of such a life-time of collecting by Colin and the collection takes pride of place in the hallway of Schaeffer House.
